What would life be like without onions? The onion has been used as an ingredient in various dishes for thousands of years by many cultures around the world. World onion production is steadily increasing so that onion is now the second most important horticultural crop after tomatoes. There are many different varieties of onion, red, yellow, white, and green, each with their own unique flavor, from very strong to mildly sweet. Onions can be eaten raw, cooked, fried, dried or roasted. They are commonly used to flavor dips, salads, soups, spreads, stir-fry and other dishes.

Piyaz (Allium cepa) belong to the lily family, the same family as garlic, leeks, chives, scallions and shallots. There are over 600 species of Allium, distributed all over Europe, North America, Northern Africa and Asia. The plants can be used as ornamentals, vegetables, spices, or as medicine. There are over 120 different documented uses of the Alliums.

Piyaz and other Allium vegetables are characterized by their rich content of thiosulfinates, sulfides, sulfoxides, and other odoriferous sulfur compounds. The cysteine sulfoxides are primarily responsible for the onion flavor and produce the eye-irritating compounds that induce lacrimation. The thiosulfinates exhibit antimicrobial properties. Onion is effective against many bacteria including Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella, and E. coli. Onion is not as potent as garlic since the sulfur compounds in onion are only about one-quarter the level found in garlic.

Reasons for Decreased Sperm Count

How to Increase Sperm Count naturally

How to Increase Sperm Count naturally

Sperm count reduces when the temperature of testicles increases. Temperature of testicles increases by using tight pants, undergarments, hot water showers, sauna etc. Avoiding these causes help to increase sperm count. Washing testicles with cold water after bath help to increase sperm count and sperm motility.Weight increase causes hormonal imbalance and reduces testosterone level in men. Weight reduction helps to reverse this condition .Increased testosterone increases sperm count. In obese people fat layers of abdomen overlap testicles when they sit. Because of this the temperature of testicles raises. Hence sitting for long hours can reduce sperm count in obese people. Over weighted persons who sit for long hours , are advised to take a break in between and walk around for 10 – 15 minutes. This helps to increase sperm count and reduce weight.

How to Increase Sperm Count with Ayurveda

  • Increase in the temperature of the testicles reduces sperm count. So, wear loose undergarments, wash testicles with cold water and avoid hot showers and saunas.
  • Massaging the body with oil, a technique known as abhayanga in ayurveda, increases blood circulation and sperm count. Abhayanga slackens aging, boosts health and increases the libido.
  • Restrict masturbation and frequent sex, as continual ejaculations reduce the density of the semen.
  • Alcohol consumption and smoking affect the liver and cause a dramatic rise in oestrogen levels. This results in low sperm count.
  • Keep your weight in check as weight increase causes hormonal imbalances which in turn reduce testosterone levels in males. Exercise regularly and stay fit.
  • Eat a nutritious, low fat diet which is high in proteins, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Reduce stress by regular meditation and yoga. Psychological factors such as stress and strain are known to reduce sperm count.
  • There are some herbal remedies also to increase sperm count with ayurveda. Certain herbs, known as  bajikaran dravya in ayurveda are known to increase the sperm count as well as their quality.

The WHO provides a definition of a ‘normal’ sperm count:

  • the concentration of spermatozoa should be at least 20 million per ml.
  • the total volume of semen should be at least 2ml.
  • the total number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate should be at least 40 million.
  • at least 75 per cent of the spermatozoa should be alive (it is normal for up to 25 per cent to be dead).
  • at least 30 per cent of the spermatozoa should be of normal shape and form.
  • at least 25 per cent of the spermatozoa should be swimming with rapid forward movement.
  • at least 50 per cent of the spermatozoa should be swimming forward, even if only sluggishly.

How To Increase Sperm Count Naturally

Sperm count is the number (or concentration) of sperm that should be present/measurable in a given sample. The World Health Organization provides guidelines for a healthy sperm count. The benchmark for a “normal” count is 20 million sperm per milliliter – given a total semen volume of 2 ml. That equates to a total number of sperm per/sample of 40 million. The SpermCheck Fertility Test is an inexpensive, at-home test that can be used to determine if your sperm count is in the normal range (over 20 million per milliliter).

If these large numbers are startling, one conclusion one may quickly draw is that it generally requires large numbers of sperm to ensure that a pregnancy is achieved. That’s because only a relative few of these 20 to 40 million sperm are capable of making the long and difficult journey through the cervix to fallopian tube to the awaiting egg. And as there is typically only one egg released during ovulation into one fallopian tube, approximately 50% of any awaiting sperm will likely gather around the “wrong” fallopian tube entrance. Complicating things even more, under ideal circumstances, sperm can only live for a handful of days, so an egg must be “punctual” if conception is to take place.

If conceiving is a “numbers game”, then sperm count is important. At the same time, a lower than average sperm count does not consign you to an infertility category. In fact, a low sperm count does not mean that you cannot conceive, it simply means that 1) it may take longer to conceive a baby 2) dietary, lifestyle, or health interventions may be required 3) ovulation prediction/timing intercourse in accordance with a prescribed frequency of intercourse may be advised or 4) more formal medical interventions may be suggested by your doctor. Also, a “low sperm count” should not be confused with more serious issues like azoospermia, or not having any measurable sperm count at all (whether due to physiological obstructions or spermatogenesis issues).

Infertility

Infertility

What is infertility?

Infertility means not being able to get pregnant after one year of trying. Or, six months, if a woman is 35 years of age or older. Women who can get pregnant but are unable to stay pregnant may also be infertile.

Pregnancy is the result of a process that has many steps. To get pregnant—

A woman’s body must release an egg from one of her ovariesExternal Web Site Icon (ovulation).
The egg must go through a fallopian tubeExternal Web Site Icon toward the uterusExternal Web Site Icon (womb).
A man’s sperm must join with (fertilize) the egg along the way.
The fertilized egg must attach to the inside of the uterus (implantation).

Infertility can happen if there are problems with any of these steps.
Is infertility a common problem?

Yes. About 10 % of women (6.1 million) in the United States ages 15–44 years have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant.

Top of Page
Is infertility just a woman’s problem?

No, infertility is not always a woman’s problem. Both women and men can have problems that cause infertility. About one-third of infertility cases are caused by women’s problems. Another one third of fertility problems are due to the man. The other cases are caused by a mixture of male and female problems or by unknown problems.
What causes infertility in men?

Infertility in men is most often caused by—

A problem called varicocele (VAIR-ih-koh-seel). This happens when the veins on a man’s testicle(s) are too large. This heats the testicles. The heat can affect the number or shape of the sperm.
Other factors that cause a man to make too few sperm or none at all.
Movement of the sperm. This may be caused by the shape of the sperm. Sometimes injuries or other damage to the reproductive system block the sperm.

Sometimes a man is born with the problems that affect his sperm. Other times problems start later in life due to illness or injury. For example, cystic fibrosis often causes infertility in men.
What increases a man’s risk of infertility?

A man’s sperm can be changed by his overall health and lifestyle. Some things that may reduce the health or number of sperm include—

Heavy alcohol use
Drugs
Smoking cigarettes
Age
Environmental toxins, including pesticides and lead
Health problems such as mumps, serious conditions like kidney disease, or hormone problems
Medicines
Radiation treatment and chemotherapy for cancer

What causes infertility in women?

Most cases of female infertility are caused by problems with ovulation. Without ovulation, there are no eggs to be fertilized. Some signs that a woman is not ovulating normally include irregular or absent menstrual periods.

Men Seek
Infertility Services
Many couples struggle with infertility and seek help to become pregnant; however, it is often thought of as only a women’s condition. But a CDC study analyzed data from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth, and found that 7.5% of all sexually experienced men reported a visit for help with having a child at some time during their lifetime—this equates to 3.3–4.7 million men. Of men who sought help, 18.1% were diagnosed with a male-related infertility problem, including sperm or semen problems (13.7%) and varicocele (5.9%).

Anderson JE, Farr SL, Jamieson DJ, Warner L, and Macaluso M. Infertility services reported by men in the United States: national survey data. Fertility and Sterility 2009; (6):2466–2470.

Ovulation problems are often caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a hormone imbalance problem which can interfere with normal ovulation. PCOS is the most common cause of female infertility. Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is another cause of ovulation problems. POI occurs when a woman’s ovaries stop working normally before she is 40. POI is not the same as early menopause.

Less common causes of fertility problems in women include—

Blocked fallopian tubes due to pelvic inflammatory diseaseExternal Web Site Icon, endometriosisExternal Web Site Icon, or surgery for an ectopic pregnancyExternal Web Site Icon
Physical problems with the uterus
Uterine fibroidsExternal Web Site Icon, which are non-cancerous clumps of tissue and muscle on the walls of the uterus

What things increase a woman’s risk of infertility?

Many things can change a woman’s ability to have a baby. These include—

Age
Smoking
Excess alcohol use
Stress
Poor diet
Athletic training
Being overweight or underweight
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
Health problems that cause hormonal changes, such as polycystic ovarian syndromeExternal Web Site Icon and primary ovarian insufficiencyExternal Web Site Icon

How does age affect a woman’s ability to have children?Women with timer

Many women are waiting until their 30s and 40s to have children. In fact, about 20% of women in the United States now have their first child after age 35. So age is a growing cause of fertility problems. About one-third of couples in which the woman is older than 35 years have fertility problems.

Aging decreases a woman’s chances of having a baby in the following ways—

Her ovaries become less able to release eggs
She has a smaller number of eggs left
Her eggs are not as healthy
She is more likely to have health conditions that can cause fertility problems
She is more likely to have a miscarriage

 Oligo-S capsules for infertility

Oligo-S capsules for infertility

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Oligospermia is the presence of fewer than the normal number of sperm in the semen. In normal circumstances, each ejaculation releases three milliliters (ml) of sperm. The normal range of sperm count in each ejaculate is between 20 million/ml and 250 million /ml. At least 60 percent of those sperm should have a normal shape and structure (morphology) and show normal forward movement (motility). Men with fewer than 20 million sperm/ml are usually defined as having oligospermia, or a low sperm count.

Recent survey has shown trend in decline in sperm count and sperm quality in recent time. It may be due to a range of factors, possibly related to life-style and environment in developed countries, which can disrupt production of the male hormone testosterone. Oligo-S contains ingredients that help in spermatogenesis (production of sperm). Fulfils the hopes of childless couples by increasing the secretion of semen and sperm count thereby removing sexual debility and improving motility and morphology of sperms. Also useful in general debility and increases the general heat of the body.

CONTRAINDICATIONS : None

SIDE EFFECTS : None

DOSAGE : 2 capsules 2 times a day with a glass of milk. Continue the use for 3-4 months.

DIETARY ADVICE : Nutritional and lifestyle changes increase chances for conception. Smoking, caffeine, drug and alcohol consumption, and stress are related to infertility. Reproductive organs are highly susceptible to free radical or oxidative damage from environmental toxicants (pesticides, insecticides, lead, radiation, and heavy metals) and natural aging.
